The map is the oldest known cartographic depiction of Hove and shows it when it was farmed as open fields or 'laines' before they disappeared under the 19th century development of Brighton and Hove. Thomas Marchant was a prominent Sussex map maker and the map was created for William Mitchell (1708-71), a Lewes lawyer working inter alia for the Duke of Dorset and the Pelham family.
