The township of Forton, part of the pre-Conquest estates of Earl Tostig, passed to the newly-founded Premonstratensian Abbey of Cockersand in the late 12th century. This interesting group of 17 mostly medieval documents, the earliest dating from c.1150, before the foundation of the Abbey, includes several deeds copied into the Abbey's cartulary.
