Edward Robert Bulwer, 1st Earl of Lytton (1831-91), statesman and poet, was Viceroy of India from 1876 to 1880. The 177 files inlcude his public and private papers from 1876-80 and his correspondence from his Private Secretary's Office. The papers cover the key issues in India at the time, including the Imperial Assemblage (where Queen Victoria was proclaimed Empress of India), the Second Afghan War; famine relief; Civil Service reform; the Salt Tax and the Vernacular Press Act, 1878.
